Company description::
Philadelphia, Pa. (April 20, 2004) – TurnTide™, the inventor of the world’s first Anti-Spam Router (ASR), today introduced TurnTide ASR-Outbound, which is designed to help service providers prevent the sending of spam from their domains. The company also announced that Iowa Telecom, an Internet Service Provider (ISP) that hosts over 65,000 email accounts, is successfully using TurnTide ASR-Outbound, in conjunction with TurnTide ASR-SP series, to eliminate inbound and outbound spam from their network. Iowa Telecom deployed TurnTide ASR-SP series, which is designed to limit inbound volume, in February and immediately saw an 80% reduction in overall volume. They recently added ASR-Outbound to eliminate outbound spam, which is a significant problem because it often results in a service provider being blacklisted.

“By eliminating both inbound and outbound volume issues, TurnTide offers service providers a powerful weapon that not only protects, but fights back against spam. We had been receiving over 2.4 million emails a day and had tried to use internal blacklists, but the volume became overwhelming. TurnTide ASR decreased our daily volume to an average between 150,000 and 200,000. This not only immediately reduced our costs, it helps us better control them moving forward,” said John Jolliffe, ISP manager at Iowa Telecom. “The new outbound version capitalizes on this great technology and gives service providers a way to prevent the negative impact that outbound spam has on its customers and the company’s reputation.”

TurnTide offers enterprises and service providers a unique anti-spam service through TurnTide ASR, which sits at the perimeter of clients’ networks and, through TCP traffic shaping, controls the traffic flow that is allowed into the protected network. The router identifies the specific point source of each email and categorizes it dynamically, based on the likelihood that each source is sending spam. TurnTide then manages quality of service to each source, providing good quality of service to good sources and poor quality to poor sources. When TurnTide categorizes a source as a spammer, it allocates very little bandwidth and resources to that source. TurnTide has successfully leveraged this technology in the development of ASR-Outbound, which offers the unique feature of protecting the service provider even when the spam is being sent network to network and is not being relayed through that service provider’s servers. TurnTide’s technology does not block or quarantine email messages so it eliminates the possibility that any legitimate emails are not delivered. TurnTide ASR-Outbound also offers administrators a control center that allows them to constantly monitor email activity and outbound volume within their network.

“We believe that service providers owe it to one another and the Internet community as a whole to police their own networks and prevent spammers from sending spam through their servers. We commend Iowa Telecom for taking a proactive stand,” said Lucinda Duncalfe Holt, chief executive and president of TurnTide . “Service providers are on the front-line in the defense against spam and need solutions that address all of these challenges. With the addition of ASR-Outbound, TurnTide is able to offer a one-of-a kind, comprehensive solution that reduces spam by an average of 90%--both inbound and outbound.”

About TurnTide™
TurnTide™ offers a unique, patent-pending, anti-spam system that revolutionizes the arsenal in the war against spam. TurnTide Anti-Spam Router (ASR) is the first in a new class of anti-spam solutions that provides perimeter-based email security. Sitting at the edge of the network, TurnTide ASR limits the bandwidth and resources that spammers can use – the system actually prevents spam from leaving the spammers’ server. This makes it expensive for spammers to send messages and over time, spammers abandon their attacks into TurnTide protected networks. TurnTide offers its clients an E-Series of the product, designed for large enterprises and educational institutions, and an SP-Series, designed for Internet Service Providers. The company is headquartered in the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA and its website is at www.TurnTide.com.
